Recruitment to Fort Socs

"Developing the 'Gold' Within"

I want to take this opportunity to give a great big kudos to Tereza for her help in 2018/19 She had initially answered an ad that i had put up at the university, asking for horse folk interested in being part of a program i was starting. Her boyfriend was a student at the university and knew how much she enjoyed being around them. She learned in the Czech republic on stallions at a farm there. She started helping at Fort Socs over the weekend that I learned that i needed surgery on my right pinky due to it being broken in two places due to a bicycle accident I had had a few weeks before. She literally became my right hand after that, helping with the feed and watering of the horses as well as helping to build a fence to keep the horses away from buildings and they hay. She is a super nice young lady too! There have been many amazing people helping out at Mandy and Me over the years. Hopefully this website will be bringing some of the other stories out in time too, but for the most part it will be about the now, and the future as well as sharing a combination of our pet stories with those of other people's.

'I've known Silverado for almost a year and a half now. She is a very kind and sincere person, helping both people and animals in need whenever she can. Her horses and dogs are a family and friends to her and she's always been putting their well-being before hers. One of her life missions is to building a better future for everyone, both people and animal. She lost nearly everything but that didn't stop her. She brought the family back together and started from scratch, still helping people on the way even she didn't have much, offering helping hands and spreading joy and peace through music. I believe what she's doing and working towards has a huge potential for the community and could even grow past the borders. And if we work together, we can make it happen!'

Tereza is leading Sambucca and riding Faith in this picture. I had gone into a local fruit stand to grab some apples to share with the horses.

Tereza is on Faith here while Justice and Alexander flank her and Serandipity is in the background.

This is Alexander and Tereza. Seems he wanted to check out her breakfast of oatmeal! We would sometimes take turns watching the horses while they grazed. Magic memories.

Pony Express pizza pick up! So tasty... and something a bit different.

Fort Socs Members and The Knight MARES

Think of the Fort Socs members, as folk who maintain peace and parks, a bit like Jane Goodall's Roots and Shoots program meets a Mountie. . Knight MAREs is an idea for a group of people that will sing songs i have made over the years as well as other songs and stories geared to peace, nature, pets and local history.

There is a bit of divide and conquer world.. our mission is to be about uniting and celebrating. The buck really does start here in terms of fun, but we want to get more fiscally responsible too. Through education, collaboration and communication i really do think we can make great changes in this world!

The pictures on the far left are of Hank this past year and Hank and Prince together. Hank and Prince are such good friends! The picture on the right is Hank as a puppy. He was born March 2010. The one in the middle is him at about 6 months with his person. She was about 10 years old in the picture and had him for 3 years but the new place they moved to was not suitable for him so she had to give him up. Her grandma on her father's side knew she would like to be able to one day see him and wanted a good home for him so she put out a facebook request. I had ridden with her a few times and know what it is like to lose a pet at that age so volunteered to have him in our fur family. She gets to see how he is doing on facebook and has come to visit us, now that she can drive! She is a very horse savvy person, having competed in gymkhana and been on a farm most of her life.

Pretty full circle since not having my fur family while at university was a big reason i stopped my studies and running at U Vic. I then turned what had been a hobby of trailrides into a business. It started out mostly with local young people and families but eventually tourists became the main clients. Now am working to be a school for peace through tourism as well as a tourist stop while students get some stress relief and funding. At our original business site, many young people learned to earn rides and in time some earned income to pursue their own passions. Many have their own horses, family or both.

This picture is of Aima and Serandipity from about 2014. She started riding with us while attending UBCO. She realized that riding horses was her best stress release. Now she has a few of her own and is living and working in Alberta. She had been a great help and friend while in Kelowna.

This picture is from 2012 of someone who used to help with her sister when she was about 10 years old.. now she has two children of her own and a couple horses. They started out riding on their birthdays but then asked about helping in exchange for rides. Later, as a young mom, Sarah had dreams of horses so asked about helping again. It gave her a nice break but didn't break the bank...

I think it would have been a hard choice to pic her favorite.. the canines or the equines. Good think she didn't have to!

I went to university on scholarships for my running. Ironically, it was in large part my passion for the pets that had given me the heart to be such a disciplined and passionate runner. It would ultimately be why i stopped running though too. That and my being uncomfortable in the spotlight. National records that I made then have stood for 30 years. Ultimately, my pet passions would stop my running/schooling and later my passions for all creatures would ultimately compromise my stable home. In the hopes of bringing stability to more, I hope to get support for the Magic peace park plans.

This picture was with the son of one of the delegates from the green party convention held in West Kelowna. This young fella had seemed pretty bored so i invited his family for a ride. I will never forget how when he was riding Magic he said that it had been his dream to ride a horse!

I ran federally as a paper candidate in Salaberry—Suroît Quebec in 2015. I figured i should check the region out to do any kind of justice to the party and the area. I was lucky to have a gentleman renting at my place who could look after the horses and a window of time where i could leave without losing too much income from rides or other activities. Arriving early in the morning to Montreal, I decided to visit the candidate's office there and was able to meet Daniel Green, and check out what was going on there.

In closing, meet Noah.. he is very symbolic of Mandy and Me. A loving dog who had lots of energy. His family moved and could not keep him in the motel they were staying. It was only to be a couple of months.. it would be over 10 years but he became a great companion to Theatre, my German Shepherd at the time and to everyone that came riding. They were about the same age, but Noah's energy on the rides had few to equal. He loved running so much! HIs people visited a few times, but knew he was in good hands. They helped with the first few bags of dog food, but in time realized that they would not be able to have him back. He would definitely earn his keep in the limitless love and energy he would give to our family.

Noah and I in at Rose Valley Lake. He was with us from about 1995 to about 2009. He was so fast.. would chase cars and then run in front of them! Once he was hit twice by the same truck and then took off- he knew he was in trouble. He had gotten up so quickly after getting hit by the bumper, that he got hit by something further under the truck. I would find him and then take him to get a single staple in his leg. Loved him greatly but he his energy was something else. Probably why we got along so well!
